URSA Volunteers

Supporting URSA is helping clients live life to the fullest. Together with our community, we are changing people’s lives. This is a wonderful experience not only for the individuals we serve, but for staff and volunteers as well.

Group Volunteering

Almost all URSA clients are on AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) and do not have additional income to spend on room makeovers. Our While you Were Out campaigns are a great way to get involved and impact someone’s life. Redoing a client’s room for them while they are out of the house can include: painting, new furniture, new lighting, and more!

All of our homes also require assistance with gardening and yard cleanup every spring and fall. Our clients greatly enjoy getting outside and assisting in sprucing up their yards.

URSA also has a fully wheelchair accessible Retreat Centre outside of the city where clients can go for rest and relaxation. The Centre requires a significant amount of work throughout the year and volunteers are greatly appreciated. Help is needed with: yard work, painting, cutting wood, etc.

Individual Volunteering

Individual volunteering may include a number of activities where you work with an individual or a small group of individuals. URSA is always looking for people to come in and help with household tasks, entertaining and spending time with clients and building relationships.

The possible volunteer opportunities are endless and make great team building activities. Please contact URSA for more information on these options and see what a difference a day makes in the lives of our clients.

Who can volunteer for us?

  • Anyone over the age of 18
  • Groups (music groups, businesses, churches, etc.)
  • Students, parents and grandparents
  • People who want to make a difference

URSA is always eager to work with practicum students looking for placement.

Contact us to volunteer with URSA!

We require a police information check for both the safety of our clients and all people who work or volunteer with us. URSA can process this for you.

Volunteers Matter

Ashley

Ashley spent his childhood in and out of foster care and group homes, leading to time spent in prison as he grew older.  At 27 years of age, Ashley sustained a severe traumatic brain injury from a violent assault in prison.  He was in a coma for approximately two and a half months, and awoke shackled to a hospital bed without the ability to even feed himself.  Slowly and painfully, as the months went by, Ashley learned to walk, talk and eat again with the help of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton.

Ashley moved back to Calgary and came to URSA as the last graduate of the Transitional Brain Injury Program. There he had 24/7 supervision to help him relearn independent living skills such as personal decision making, cooking, cleaning and how to grocery shop.  From here, Ashley moved into a bachelor suite at the Bob Ward Residence, where he could now truly live independently.  To help support his independent living, the Supports for Community Living Service Program at URSA provides personalized service with minimal supervision to help Ashley find strategies to compensate for things he lost with his injury.

Ashley is truly grateful for his second chance at life, and enjoys having coffee with friends, playing video games, working out at the gym and having the ability to live independently in the community.  His true passion is to share his story and experiences with others, in hopes that they may take into account his story and change the path that they may be on.

Ashley is thankful to be where he is today and volunteers much of his time at URSA. From helping set up and take down at URSA events; helping in the administrative building weekly, and pitching in wherever URSA needs him. He also volunteers at numerous events telling his story and how appreciative he is of the services he received at URSA.

Thank you Ashley for dedicating so much time to serving URSA clients!

Fast Facts
